I am a student at in Uru Mānuka. In 2020 I was a year 7 and in 2021 I will be a year 8. This is a place where I will be able to share my learning with you. Please note....some work won't be edited - just my first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. I would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.
So since its almost the start of the summer holidays we are starting to do some of the summer learning Activities. The one I did today was a colouring one online. Where you have to try and copy or make your own picture. Here is mine that I did.
So this term we started to learn about marketing and banking so we could start planning and making our own business for business and enterprise.
We firstly started off learning about banking and money with banqer which helped us understand all the basics with marketing. After we had done that we did some group projects about money and bills and all of that.
After we had learnt how to make a good business and how to look after it we started planning. My group was with Eduarda and Skyla. We all had jobs that we were set to do like CEO, the marketing manger, production manger , and the finance manger. I was the CEO so I had to make sure that our marketing was gonna work. For our business we decided to make clay rings and call our stand unique creations.
We made sure we were gonna make profit for the money we had and then started making. We made around 50 for 1.50 each.
Then yesterday all of the groups went out and sold our stuff. There was a lot of cool ideas like pants,Christmas cards, lolly necklaces that I thought look pretty cool and way more. Our stall sold most of our stuff and make quite a lot of profit.
The first video is about what is alcohol and the science behind that. The second one if how to brew kombucha and all the step by step instructions and all about it. And the second one explains the science of fermentation.
Aim: I want to find out how red cabbage can tell if a liquid is an acid or a base.
Research:
Method:
Equipment:
beaker
warm water
red cabbage
test tubes
Acid(hydrochloric acid)
Base (sodium hydroxide)
dropper
instructions:
wash your hands
get all your equipment
put warm water into your beaker about half way
cut your red cabbage and put it in your beaker
Let it soak all the colouring in while stirring it.
with your dropper put some of the cabbage water into each test tube and then experiment and try to make different colours with the acid and base.
Results:
Discussion:
What is an acid and a base?
An acid is any hydrogen-containing substance that is capable of donating a proton (hydrogen ion) to another substance. A base is a molecule or ion able to accept a hydrogen ion from an acid.
what do chemical indicators do?
chemical indicator, any substance that gives a visible sign, usually by a colour change, of the presence or absence of a threshold concentration of a chemical species, such as an acid or an alkali in a solution. ... The common application of indicators is the detection of end points of titrations.
using your Popsicle stick mix some of each powder together
taste the sherbet
if there if too much baking soda add more citric acid
if there is too much citric acid add more baking soda
And to make it taste better add more Raro if theres too much of the other powders
Results:
The first time i tried making it it tasted very bitter but after a couple of trys I got it right.
Discussion:
Why did the sherbet not foam on the paper but did in you mouth?
Because it needs liquid to foam and when its in your mouth it foams because of your saliva.
What was the chemical reaction in the sherbet?
The fizzing sensation experienced when eating sherbet is a result of the chemical reaction between the citric acid and the sodium bicarbonate. The reaction also produces small bubbles of carbon dioxide but only when the dry ingredients are wet by saliva in the mouth.

Discussion:
How do you taste food?our taste buds pick up clues about how a food tastes and sends messages about it to your brain along with wires called nerves. To taste something properly, you need to chew food into small pieces and to have a lot of drool, or saliva. This help the flavour molecules (also known as “tastants”) reach your taste buds.
What are the different tastes? Sweet, sour, bitter, salty and a new one savoury
does smell affect your taste? Our sense of smell in responsible for about 90% of what we taste. Without our sense of smell, our sense of taste is limited to only five distinct sensations: sweet, salty, sour, bitter and the newly discovered “umami” or savory sensation. All other flavours that we experience come from smell.
The performing arts are arts such as music, dance, and drama which are performed for an audience. It is different from visual arts, which is when artists use paint, canvas or various materials to create physical or static art objects.
I want to find out how to get rid of burning chilli off my tongue.
Research:
Find a funny video of eating chilli
Find a video about the science of chilli
Method:
Equipment
Coke
Chilli
Popsicle
Water
Coca-cola
Timer
Cup
Instructions
Get your equipment.
Scoop some chilli onto your stick.
start your timer and eat the chilli.
stop the timer after 4 minutes.
Rate how hot you mouth is.
do experiment again but drink water after 2 minutes drink water.
do the experiment again but drink coca-cola.
drink milk
Results: (4 minutes each)
The first chilli i did was without water and i am scoring it a 10/10 for burning.
the second time, i did was with water and i am scoring it a 8/10
the third time i did was with coco cola and i'm scoring it a 9/10 (but i thinks its because i did more)
The last time i did it was with milk and i'm scoring it a 5/10
Discussion:
Why does chilli burn your mouth?
it contains an alkaline, oil-based molecule called capsaicin, which sneakily triggers the temperature-sensitive pain receptors in your mouth/taste buds
why does the milk reduce the burn?
it helps your mouth handle capsaicin, Capsaicin binds to a receptor in the tongue and creates a burning sensation. ... Since capsaicin is fat-soluble, rinsing with milk fat helps ease the burn
So my holidays where pretty boring and I cant remember much of what I did but i'm gonna share some of the things that I remember and enjoyed. So I went for a couple walks around the hills but one of them I quite enjoyed but I forgot the name of it. It was also my mums birthday in the holidays so we went out for dinner with some friends at bears and the food was actually quite good. Then on the last day I went to qe2 with some friends.
Hello, i'm going to be telling you about what I have been doing the past few weeks in coding. I'm on lesson 10 part 1. At the moment we have just been learning how to do speeches and asking questions also playing around with the behaviours and the sprites.
I have made a little game asking some questions about yourself its just something little so its not the best. But here is the link in case you would like to try it out.
